10 secret weapons that never came to light – Top 10 Lists & facts

Even before man could stand erect on his feet, he must had been using some kind of weapon for defense, hunting purposes and to establish his supremacy over the kingdom of the beasts. As mankind progressed, man came up with new weapons which were further deadlier. Once was the time when we had started with weapons like swords and arrows. And now is the age when we have RPGs and nuclear bombs. However, not all attempts by man to make new and deadly weapons proved to be successful. Let me take you through 10 warfare technologies that could never see the light of the day.

10. Iceberg Aircraft Carrier

This  weapon, famously called Project Habbakkuk, transcended all barriers of fantasies found in science fiction. During World War II, the Brits arrived on a plan to construct an aircraft carrier out of a substance called pykrete. Pykrete is a mixture of wood pulp and ice. However, the novel idea died down due to other priorities of the war and the calculation of the huge waste of resources it would have generated.

 9. Lunar Nuclear Bomb

Soviet Union and United States had always been at loggerheads in terms of scientific and technological advancements. USSR had been successful in putting the first man into space. US, fearing that USSR was taking enough lead in the field of space exploration, feared that the Union may establish its dominance in the space. To counter this and to revive the morale of its citizens, US planned to blow up using nuclear secret weapons. This covert plan of nuking the moon was known as Project 119-A. However, this was never carried out as US slowly but steadily learnt it was far easier and far more prudential to place man on the moon rather than to blow it up.

8. Death Ray

This device did come into existence, as claimed by Nikola Tesla. He had designed a device that could kill any person by emitting a special type of ray directed at the person to be killed. Can you imagine the scale of havoc it would have wreaked in the world, if it fallen in wrong hands? Well, even if you can’t, Tesla could! And hence he destroyed one of the secret weapons himself before anyone could know how it was designed.

7. The deadly Salmon

United States has always been at the forefront of designing innovative warfare machines. But sometimes it crosses the line with its fantasies. US realized that it would be better if its aircrafts had not required to land somewhere, rather if they could be in their ships all the time. XFV-Salmon was the brainchild of this concept. It was a plane that had landing gears on its tail. However, it was soon found that the pilots of these planes could not land backwards and the plane was also found to be too slow and over-complicated to fly.

6. The anti-gravity aircrafts

During World War II, a lot of technological advancement was occurring at a very fast pace. Nazis had come up with the idea of a levitating vehicle that would defy gravity. The story is not yet over! The scientists had even come up with designs of the prospective aircraft. If it had ever been made, it would have sparked one of the biggest revolutions in the history of applied physics and automotive engineering.

5. Soviet Doomsday Device

There is a bit of confusion as to whether this device actually was made or not. However, in a series of contradictory statements, the Soviet military and Central Committee of the Communist Party had admitted to have created the Soviet Doomsday Device. This secret weapon is said to be still fully operational. It is a nuclear-control system that can automatically trigger the launch of the Russian Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs), in case a nuclear strike is detected by seismic, light, radioactivity and overpressure sensors, creating a fail-deadly deterrence.

4. The Flying Dorito

Famously called the A-12 Avenger II, it is supposed to be an all-weather carrier based stealth bomber aircraft. This was supposed to replace the Grumman A-6 intruder of US Navy and Marine Corps. However, factors of cost overruns marred this project to create this secret weapon, leading to its eventual shutdown in 1991 and a loss of $5 billion.

3. Futuristic Invader

Ever seen a bomber carrying atomic bombs at speeds of three times that of sound and that too at an altitude of 15 metres? Perhaps not! Because such a secret weapon aircraft was being designed before it got cancelled. Two prototypes were eventually used; one of them crashed following a midair collision in 1966. There were many factors that lead to its cancellation, including the change to low-level penetration bombing, improvements of high-altitude surface-to-air missiles, the program’s high development costs, and the introduction of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBMs).

2. Thunderscreech

The XF-84H was an experimental turboprop aircraft, powered by a single turbine engine that was mated to a supersonic propeller. However, there were hordes of problems plaguing the project. A large number of aerodynamic decencies along with the fact that it was the loudest aircraft ever made, led to its cancellation. It is generally said that the sound of the engine starting up could be heard 25 miles away, which caused blowing out of eardrums and severe nausea among the ground crew.

1. Sun Gun

Nazis were perhaps genius when it comes to conceptualizing mass-destruction secret weapons. The brainchild of a German physicist Hermann Oberth, this device was meant to be a theoretical orbital weapon. The idea was to design a space station from with a 100 meter wide concave mirror on it. The mirror would be used to reflect sunlight onto a concentrated point on Earth. At the advent of the World War II, Nazi scientists expanded on Oberth’s concept that would be part of a colossal space station which would be 5100 miles above the surface of the Earth. It was widely claimed that the amount of heat projected by this device could boil up oceans and reduce cities to ashes. Although Americans also managed to capture an experimental model of the Sun Gun in 1945, however this secret weapon could never come into existence.
